The Data Protection Act 2018 requires the ICO to compile various codes of practice, including one on the processing of personal data for the purposes of journalism. 

While the code will be based on the existing guidance under the DPA 1998, the creation of a formal code, as well as the requirements under the DPA 2018 for the ICO to monitor journalists, marks an expansion post-GDPR of the ICO's role in monitoring journalists' compliance with data protection rules (which has also previously been covered in the Press Gazette here
