Of all the new gTLDs that have been released to date, .app seems to be the one to watch. World Trademark Review reports that over 3,000 domains were registered during sunrise.
From 8th May, .app domains will be available on a first come, first served basis so if you are a tech business with an app, you should diarise to secure your preferred .app on the 8th before someone else does!
While new domain name releases tend to fill brand owners with dread since it represents a new opportunity for cybersquatters, the good news is that Google (who paid $25 million for gTLD) has confirmed that any brand owners registered with the Trademark Clearing House will receive notifications about third parties seeking to register domains featuring their marks indefinitely and not just for the first 90 days.
Of all the new gTLDs that have been released to date, it seems that .app is most likely to become the viable alternative for .com which is now a very cluttered domain space.
The new top-level domain (TLD) is an obvious choice for app developers and others in the tech industry, as it serves as an easy-to-remember alternative to .com domains – where inventory has long been running low for popular words.
